Fred: You look a bit peaked, Iryna. Why don’t you have some tea?

Iryna: Tea?! He should have just lit me on fire right then, but I can’t say no, so I put the kettle on. I sit and dread the sound of that whistle. I could feel the sweat running down into my bum, the heat is coming in waves. Jennie put the cup in front of me.

Jennie: (whispers) Just pretend.

Iryna: So I pretended but really I just wanted to throw it in Fred’s face. Then he says . . .

Fred: Soup for lunch?

Iryna: I nod and smile, and he and the boys get up and leave. Soup. Steaming, bubbling, hot brewing soup.
